Dowsing is Divination

By Katta Mapes, Your Psycho-Spiritual Guide and Xplorer

Dowsing, an ancient practice dating back thousands of years, is still relevant and in demand today. From finding water sources to determining the sex of a fetus, dowsers have been able to tap into an invisible field of information to answer various questions and assist in different endeavors.

Historical images depicting dowsing can be found all over the world, from cave paintings in northern Africa to ancient Chinese etchings. This ancient practice has persisted through the ages and continues to be used by modern water dowsers like Susan McNeill Spuhler and Grahame Gardner, who are hired to find water sources before drilling a well. Although hydrologists claim their methods are more successful, water dowsers have achieved numerous successes in locating groundwater. In drought-stricken areas, professional water diviners are in high demand.

Dowsing has also been used historically to determine the sex of a fetus. Pregnant women would use a pendulum or a wedding ring suspended on a string to observe the direction of its swing over their bellies. This practice has evolved today with the popularity of gender reveal parties, but the concept remains the same.

The Tucson Dowsers, a long-standing local chapter of the American Society of Dowsers (ASD), defines dowsing as a powerful, ancient energetic system that connects individuals to an invisible field of information. This organization hosts monthly virtual meetings that bring together dowsing experts specializing in various aspects of modern dowsing. Here is their link:

The ASD, founded in 1961, is a nonprofit corporation that has expanded its advocacy and information resources for dowsing over the years. Interest in dowsing is not limited to a specific region; it is an international phenomenon.

Dowsing is an applied intuitive art that often involves the use of devices to make the unseen visible. Some dowsers can achieve the same results without any tools, relying solely on their intuition. Setting an energetic intention is the foundation for all dowsing sessions.

Radiesthesia, another name for dowsing, is based on the belief that all things emit waveforms or frequencies. Humans can use their mental capacities, specifically their intention, to resonate with these waves or rays and detect, measure, and manage energy forces. For instance, it is believed that the Egyptians used radiesthesia to build their pyramids. Everything in existence is energy in one form or another, and dowsing practices tap into these energies to achieve specific intentions.

Various devices are commonly used in dowsing, including the "Y" rod, "L" rods, and pendulums. The "Y" rod, a forked device, moves up or down to indicate the location of the desired object, such as water or minerals. "L" rods, typically metal rods with a 90-degree bend, come together or move apart to show the focus of the intention. Pendulums, objects dangled on a string or chain, can move in all directions and can be used with a dowsing chart to obtain specific details.

Dowsing can also be performed without any devices and is commonly known as muscle testing. Muscle testing, also known as applied kinesiology, is often used in alternative medicine to assess various physical, mental, and emotional ailments.

The ASD website lists professional dowsers who specialize in different areas, such as water dowsing, finding lost objects, personal wellbeing, detecting earth energies and geopathic stress, and energy clearing. These dowsers not only practice their specialties but also teach others about the different facets of dowsing.

In conclusion, dowsing, an ancient practice with a rich history, continues to be relevant in modern times. Its ability to tap into an invisible field of information and its versatility in addressing various questions and challenges make it a valuable tool in today's world. Whether it's finding water sources, determining the sex of a fetus, or addressing personal wellbeing, dowsing offers a unique approach to accessing and utilizing the energies around us.

Note: This year Susan McNeill Spuhler once again is producing the Flagstaff Dowsing Conference at the Little America Hotel from October 4-10 2023. Both before and after the weekend conference participants can attend specialty workshops, including beginning and advanced dowsing schools. The weekend Young People’s Mystery School of Dowsing will start for kids and teens on the dowsing path.
